[gandha]गंध [gandha] means "scent" in Sanskrit, as it appears in प्रज्ञापारमिताहृदय (Prajñā-pāramitā-hṛdaya or Heart Sutra).
Many ancient Chinese buddhist monks have chosen the Chinese character 香（xiāng） for the Sanskrit गंध in translating numerous Sacred Texts. It should be noted that the letter 香 has several meanings; first of all it means "scent" as गंध did, and also "incense" to diffuse holy scents - such as wood resin and chips, root of plants as well as their leaves, flowers and fruits.
In another context 香 is sometimes used as a metaphor of
"something precious, valuable but hardly visible" - the spirit and
words of Buddha and buddhistic philosophy for example.
This holds true in the history of Japanese literatures, too. The son of Hikaru Genji, who is the main character of one of the most famous Japanese medieval novel 源氏物語 Genji Monogatari - The Tale of Genji, is named 薫 (Kaoru = one that gives 香り kaori, where kaori means beautuful scent and implies his exquisite sophistication). And Hikaru's grand son's name is 匂宮 (Niou-no-miya. 匂う is the verbal form of the noun 匂い nioi = scent), since people could know where he was or had been because some mysteriously wonderful scent was always with him like his shadow, and also left even after he had gone away.
『仏教語読み方辞典』（1991）、『平成新編ダラニ大辞典』（1992）、『平成新編仏教法具図鑑』（1993）、『密教名句辞典』（1994） 等々、多数の著書がある有賀要延氏は、その著書のひとつ『香と仏教』（国書刊行会、1990）の冒頭において、仏教における香（こう）に関し以下のことを 述べている。
- 香（こう）はサンスクリット語でgandhaḥといい、乾陀・健達・乾陀羅耶と音写する
- 具体的には、香気に富んだ樹脂、木片、根、葉、花果等で作られた薫物の総称である
- 香は諸仏菩薩への供養のために用いるなど、仏事に深くかかわるもので、日本へは仏教とともに渡来したとみられる
このサイトにおける「香」とは、原則として上に示されている薫物（たきもの）およびその香気を指すものとする。なお上記 1 において、サンスクリットからのアルファベット転写の最後に ḥ がついているのは梵字に「涅槃点」を付した場合の発音であるため、本サイトでは涅槃点をつける前の状態である gandha という表記を用いることとする。
